Residential Program

Our Residential program is a comprehensive program that provides a structured environment with individual and group counseling by qualified treatment professionals. In addition to housing facilities, we provide nutritious and wholesome meals to all residents. O'Brien House maintains close connections with Alcoholics Anonymous, Cocaine Anonymous, and Narcotics Anonymous while also providing facility space for meetings. Other life skills are also nurtured at O'Brien House through career counseling, employment opportunities, and tutoring in English, Math, and GED preparation.

The Residential Program plays a critical role in an individual's recovery.  The continuum of care listed below shows how O'Brien House fits into the process.

Transitional Living Program

Transitional living facilities are for those clients who are "on hold" (or waiting) for placement at an inpatient treatment facility.  Clients housed under Transitional Living:

  • may not seek employment

  • must be accompanied by a staff member to leave the premises

  • may not have visitors except with prior approval and special permission from the treatment director

  • must adhere to the Transitional Living program expectations and rules, which are given at the time of intake

  • will remain in the Transitional Living phase until transferred to an inpatient treatment facility

Halfway House Program

The Halfway House Program is an intensive six month residential program, which consists of three phases for client development.

Phase One:

Phase One is the beginning phase of the clinical program.  The average length of time for clients in Phase One is 25 to 45 days.  Phase One clients must meet the following criteria and goals before being approved for Phase Two:

  • Complete, as per assigned counselor's instructions, Steps 1, 2 and 3 and present them in group

  • Acquire and use a 12-Step sponsor

  • Complete Step 4 and schedule Step 5 with a 12-Step sponsor

  • Complete written summaries of Chapters 1 through 11 in the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous

  • Complete and hand in Daily Participation sheets as directed by the assigned counselor

  • Attend daily 12-Step meetings, including at least three outside 12-Step meetings per week and attending the mandatory Cocaine Anonymous meeting on Sunday evening

  • Must be able to personalize individual Relapse Warning Signs and have a good working knowledge of The Relapse Progression Chart.

  • Complete all hand-outs in the O'Brien House Entry Packet and review with the assigned counselor

  • Attend all therapeutic groups everyday and on-time

  • Demonstrate appropriate recovery skills through interaction with peers, completion of assigned house duties and chores, and have few (if any) write-ups

  • Complete any assigned literacy training and/or job readiness skills development

  • remain in compliance with ALL prescribed medications at the proper dosage levels

Phase One clients may not leave the premises unless they are accompanied by a staff member except with prior approval and special permission from the treatment director.

Phase Two:

Phase Two is the secondary phase of the clinical program.  The average length of time for clients in Phase Two is 60 days.  Phase Two clients must meet the following criteria and goals before being approved for Phase Three:

  • Complete, as per assigned counselor's instructions, Steps 5, 6, 7, and 8

  • Continue to use and work with a 12-Step sponsor

  • Personalize and present in group The Relapse Progression

  • Continue written summaries of the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous up to and including "A Vision for You"

  • Personalize and present to group and counselor High Risk Situations regarding employment and social situations

  • Punctually attend all groups and meetings

  • Demonstrate an acceptable level of personal and programmatic responsibility by adhering to pass procedures and Client Handbook

  • Have appropriate peer interactions within the community

  • Find and maintain full-time employment

  • Stay current on all client service fees

  • Open a savings account

Phase Two clients must have been pre-approved to go on job search.  Passes must be arranged ahead of time for any off-premises activities.  Clients in Phase Two must sign in and out for each activity off-premises.  Phase Two clients are NOT allowed to have a car, but they may put in a request to have a car once they are advanced to Phase Three.  All new employment must be approved.  Employment such as offshore jobs, graveyard shift work, and dusk-to-dawn hours will not be approved.  Working clients in Phase Two must return to the premises and sign in no later than 6 p.m. daily.

Phase Three:

Phase Three is the final phase of the clinical program.  The average length of time for clients in Phase Three is 90 days.  Phase Three clients must meet the following criteria and goals prior to graduation from the program:

  • Complete, as per assigned counselor's instructions, Steps 9, 10, 11, and 12

  • Continue to use and work with a 12-Step sponsor

  • Attend at least three (3) 12-Step meetings per week outside off-premises and maintain continuing documentation of attendance

  • continue saving money using the savings account created in Phase Two.  Phase Three clients must save a minimum of $600 in order to graduate

  • Punctually attend all groups and meetings

  • Develop a personalized Relapse Prevention Plan

  • Complete all treatment assignments as per the assigned counselor

  • Stay current on all client service fees

  • Begin Discharge Planning with the assigned counselor within the first month in Phase Three

Phase Three clients should be a minimum of 90 days clean and sober upon entrance to Phase Three.  Clients should have a home group and a working relationship with a 12-Step sponsor.  Phase Three clients no longer need passes to leave the property, but they must still sign in and out each time they leave the premises.  Overnight passes may be granted in this phase, but must be reasonable and are at the discretion of the client's assigned counselor.  Phase Three clients may also have a car with approval by clinical staff.  Phase Three clients are expected to give back and be positive role models for the newcomers in the O'Brien House program.

Three-Quarter House Program

The plan for the three-quarter is near completion. More information on this program will be provided at a later date.
